How Does A Reversing Valve Work

As the major parts for heat pump-type air conditioners, a 4-way reversing valve has an important role in changing the flow direction of refrigerants.

It is mainly used for achieving the cooling and heating of two functions without adding any heating parts.

4 way reversing valve is consists of a pilot valve, the main valve, and solenoid coil three parts.

The pilot valve will control the main valve, adopts the pressure difference switching action to achieve the reversing.

The four connection of 4 way reversing valve is: D connects to the exhaust pipe of the compressor, S connects to the gas return pipe of the compressor, E connects to the low-pressure valve, C connects to the condenser pipe.

4 Way Reversing Valve Cooling Cycle

When the air conditioner is in cooling condition, the 4 way reversing valve is not charged with electricity, and the S connects with E, D connects with C.

The refrigerants are compressed by the compressor and turn into high temperature and high-pressure gas refrigerants, then enter from the D side and discharge from the C side of the reversing valve.

Then enters the condenser from the outdoor unit.

After the condenser absorbs cold and releases heat, the refrigerant becomes the medium temperature and high-pressure liquid refrigerant, then enter the expansion valve to become the low pressure and low-temperature liquid refrigerant;

After the evaporator of the indoor unit absorbs the heat and releases cold, the liquid refrigerants turn into low pressure and low-temperature gas refrigerants, then go through E port of reversing valve, return back to the compressor from S port, then recycle like this.

4 Way Reversing Valve Heating Cycle

When the air conditioner is in heating condition, the 4 way reversing valve is charged with electricity, the piston moves to the right side, make the S connect to the C side, D connects to the E side.

The refrigerants are compressed by the compressor and turn into high temperature and high-pressure gas refrigerants, go through D port, and are discharged from E port.

Then enter the condenser of the indoor unit.

After the condenser absorbs the cold and release heat, the refrigerants become high temperature and high-pressure liquid refrigerant, after the expansion valve, it becomes low temperature and low-pressure liquid refrigerants;

After the evaporator absorbs the heat and releases cold, it becomes low temperature and low-pressure gas-liquid, then passes through C port of reversing valve, finally go back to the compressor from S port, and keep recycling.

How to Replace Reversing Valve

Here is the brief introduction for all the main processes for replacing the reversing valve:

First step: Disconnect the power supply of the air conditioner.

Second step: Discharge all the refrigerants in the air conditioner.

Third Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve coil.

Fourth Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve.

Fifth Step: Wrap the body of the 4 way reversing valve.

Sixth Step: Install the body of the 4 way reversing valve.

Seventh Step: Weld all the connections for the 4 way reversing valve to the system.

Eighth Step: Leak detecting process.

Ninth Step: Install the coil of the 4 way reversing valve.

Tenth step: Vacuum and add the refrigerant to the system.

From here, I’ll explain the most important process in detail in the following:

Third Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve coil.

Remove the front cover and side cover of the outdoor unit, you can find the 2 leads for the 4 way reversing valve coil, the 2 leads are plug in the wiring terminal of the outdoor unit.

Firstly, remove the 2 leads, then you can remove the coil by removing the screws with a screwdriver easily.

Third Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve coil.

Fourth Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve.

A: Since the pipeline for the condenser and the 3-way valve is very near, it’s not easy to take out the four-way reversing valve, so we need to remove the pipeline for the suction and exhaust connection of the compressor.

Use the welding torch to heat the connection for the compressor exhaust port and 4-way reversing valve, when you see the port burns red and the solder material starts to flow, use the pliers to clamp the connecting copper pipe and force it downward, pull out the exhaust pipe from the 4 way reversing valve, use the same way to pull out the suction pipe of the compressor from 4 way reversing valve.

Fourth Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve.

B: Use the welding torch to heat the connection that connects the three-way valve and condenser on the 4 way to reversing valve at the same time, when the port burns red and welding material starts to flow, use the pliers to clamp the exhaust pipeline of the compressor and pull it, when the temperature is suitable and the pipeline are loosened, the 4-way reversing valve can be removed.

Fourth Step: Remove the 4-way reversing valve.

Fifth Step: Wrap the body of a 4 way reversing valve.

If the connection of 4 ways reversing valve temperature is too high because of the heating, it will be easy to damage the plastic part inside of the valve, so we choose to use a towel to wrap the valve and cool down it.

Because the heat is transferred by the 3 pipes at the root, so make sure to wrap the 3 pipes firstly.

For the rest pipe that connects with the compressor exhaust port, there is no need to wrap, because it’s very far away from a 4 way reversing valve and won’t be affected by the high temperature.

Fifth Step: Wrap the body of 4 way reversing valve.

Sixth Step: Install the body of a 4 way reversing valve.

Use the welding torch to heat the port of 3 pipelines that connect to the 4 way reversing valve, let the welding material melts and flows until it falls off, make sure the port is smooth.

Then you can easily insert the 4-way reversing valve.

Sixth Step: Install the body of a 4 way reversing valve.

Seventh Step: Weld all the connections for a 4 way reversing valve to the system.

Because the middle pipe for a 4 way reversing valve is the most difficult to weld, so we need to weld the middle pipe first, then the pipes on both sides, finally weld the pipe that connects to the compressor exhaust port.

Use the welding torch to heat the port of 4 way reversing valve unit it becomes too dark red, then add the welding rod, let the welding rod flow to seal the valve port;

Then pour the water on the towel that wraps the valve body to cool down, to prevent the high-temperature damage to the plastic part inside 4 way reversing valve.

Seventh Step: Weld all the connections for a 4 way reversing valve to the system.

Eighth Step: Leak detecting process.

Before we do the leak testing, please fill the refrigerant in the system to increase the pressure, when filling the refrigerant around 0.7Mpa for outdoor condensing units, use the leak detection foam.

Noted that test the 3 ports at the root of 4 way reversing valve carefully, check the front and back, make sure 100% sealing. The next step, check the exhaust port of the compressor in the same way.

Eighth Step: Leak detecting process.

Ninth Step: Install the coil of the 4 way reversing valve.

Install the back cover of the outdoor unit, restore the electric control box to the original position, then install the coil to the 4 way reversing valve and use a screw to tighten it well.

Finally, install the 2 leads of the valve coil to the terminal on the outdoor unit.

Ninth Step: Install the coil of a 4 way reversing valve.

Notice:
The welding of each connection for a 4 way reversing valve should be strict and reliable, avoid any inappropriate welding operation.

The 4-way reversing valve should not collide or rub against another pipeline, in case it causes any bad consequences, such as noise, damage of any parts.

Ensure to fix the valve coil firmly on the 4-way reversing valve, or the loosen situation will affect the reliability of valves.

The cooling down measures are necessary for welding the 4-way reversing valve, to prevent the damage of the orifice because of high temperature.

The 4 pipelines for 4 way reversing valve should be 2 hot and 2 cool;

If there is a situation that no temperature difference or very small temperature difference, that means the high-pressure pipe and low-pressure pipe are gassed, it doesn’t work anymore, please change the new 4-way reversing valve for your system.

FAQ

What is the reason for the excessive internal leaking?

It’s mainly caused by insufficient cooperation between the main valve and the main valve holder.

Why is this abnormal sound caused during the reversing process?

A: During the process of reversing the 4-way reversing valve, the fluid in the solenoid part is the mixture of liquid and gas, and it forms the intermittent back pressure, the piston moves and vibrates, then causes the abnormal sound.

B: When reversing, the nylon main valve and brass valve holder are sliding, because of the friction, there maybe has abnormal noise.

C: When the main valve and piston slide slowly, it will be very easy to be affected by the fluid and produce abnormal noise.

The main reason for insufficient refrigerant flow.

A: The leaking of the air conditioning system will cause insufficient refrigerant for the whole system.

B: When the temperature is too low and very cold, the evaporation capacity is not enough.

C: Choose the unmatched 4-way reversing valve for the system, which means the reversing valve’s flow is too much for the system.

D: The reversing time of the air conditioner. Normally the designed system requires the 4-way reversing valve to start work after the compressor stop working for some time, then the high pressure and low pressure tends to balance, it can be stopped when reversing to the middle position, which means the reversing valve is not reverse to the perfect position, the main valve is in the middle position. During the next start, the flow is insufficient because of the intermediate flow function.

E: When the compressor starts, the flow is insufficient, this is more obvious on the invert air conditioner.

The possibilities for poor reversal of 4 way reversing valve.

A: The reversing valve coil is disconnected or the coil voltage does not meet the performance, this causes the valve orifice of the pilot valve doesn’t work.

B: The pilot valve is deformed because of external damage.

C: The capillary of the pilot valve is deformation because of the external damage, it can’t form the pressure difference needed by reversing.

D: The main valve is deformed because of the external damage, the piston is stuck and can not move.

E: The sundries in the system enter the 4-way reversing valve, it stuck the piston or main valve and can’t move.

F: When welding the valve and pipes, the temperature is over 120℃ by inappropriate action, the inner part is deformation or damaged and can’t work. Add paragraph text here.

G: The insufficient refrigerant that may be caused by the leaking of the system, can’t form the pressure difference to achieve the reversing action.

H: Insufficient refrigerant of compressor for cycling.

I: The rotation speed is too low for the invert air conditioner, the necessary flow required can not be ensured.

J: For the scroll compressor, the system produces hydraulic shock, which causes damage for the piston of a 4 way reversing valve, it can’t work anymore.
