Common Connection Method for Pipes

Almost all piping requires on-site installation during construction.

This is because disconnected piping is more cost-effective to transport and store.

The second reason is that during construction, the piping needs to be bent to the structure of the building.

Therefore, the connection of piping is very common in engineering projects.

That’s why you need to know the different ways of connecting pipes.

The common piping connection methods are organized as follows.

1. Threaded Connection

The threaded connection is sealed by specially designed bolts.

Most of these bolts are of hollow design.

In the process of tightening the bolt, the nut exerts pressure on the line to achieve the seal.

The advantages of threaded connection are a simple design, easy installation, reliable connection, and replacement.

However, because it cannot bear too high pressure, it is mostly used in low-pressure system piping, and it is easy to leak.

2. Flange Connection

Flange connection is to add flanges to the joint part of two pipelines.

Then, a flange gasket is added between the pipe joints.

Finally, the flange is fixed with bolts to achieve the sealing of the pipeline.

Flange connection has the advantages of connection is not easy to deformation, good sealing effect.

Therefore, it is widely used in the pipeline that conveys expensive media, flammable and explosive media, and toxic gas.

3. Welding

Welding is a very old connection method.

The copper fitting and the brass fitting are necessary for welding metal pipes and are very inexpensive.

Therefore, this connection method is the least expensive and more widely used.

There are also many common welding methods, such as argon arc welding, carbon dioxide welding, etc.

4. Groove Connection

Groove connection is mainly composed of clamps, highly elastic rubber seals, and locking devices.

Groove connection has the advantages of relieving the transmission of vibration and noise, quick construction, and flexible installation.

This connection is mainly used for plumbing systems, water systems on ships, fire protection systems in residential buildings, etc.

5. Card Sleeve Connection

A card sleeve connection is also called a locknut connection.

It works by using a compression ring to apply pressure to the pipe axially, thus achieving a pipe seal.

This connection method is mainly used for the connection of large diameter pipes, such as gas pipes, drinking water pipes, etc.

6. Solderless Connection

The fireless connection method is an advanced connection method.

However, it is currently used for small diameter pipelines, such as refrigeration and air conditioning systems, oil pipelines, and oxygen pipelines.

The fireless connection technology currently on the market works on the same principle, applying pressure to the pipe to achieve a seal.

There are also many manufacturers of fireless connection technology, each with a different name.

For example propress tool, lokring tool, compression fitting.

7. Hot Melt Connection

Hot melt connection is mainly used for PVC piping.

This connection method requires the use of special heating equipment.

The hot melt connection works by melting PVC with a hot melt machine.

Then, the molten PVC pipes are quickly inserted into each other.

After the pipes have cooled down, the two PVC pipes will be bonded to each other.

The advantage of this method is that no glue is used, but the physical properties of the pipe joints need to be damaged.

8. Bonded Connection

As you can see in the video, the bonded connection uses special glue to glue the two pipes together.

This connection method can only be used for plastic pipes such as PVC pipe, CPVC pipe, ABS pipe.

Bonded connection is very suitable for domestic water system maintenance and is easy to operate.

However, there are restrictions on its use and it cannot be used for metal pipes, such as air conditioning pipes.

9. Hub & Spigot

The socket connection is mainly realized by changing the pipe diameter, such as expanding the pipe, or for the connection of pipes of different diameters.

This type of connection is very widely used and the installation process is very mature.

Therefore, it has advantages such as fast construction and low manufacturing cost.
